BCCI under probe by tax authorities

The world’s richest Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is under investigation for violating the country’s foreign exchange laws, Sports Minister Ajay Maken said on Tuesday.The government was looking into alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act amounting to Rs 1,077 crore ($206.7 million), Maken told the Parliament. He said the investigation covered the ownership of franchises and fund transfers without the permission of India’s central bank and income tax department during the 2009 Indian Premier League held in South Africa.
The BCCI moved the 2009 edition of the Twenty20 tournament out of India due to lack of security cover during general elections in the country. 964 crore is the BCCI’C 2009-10 year’s profit.Total 413 crore is the taxeble payment but BCCI is paid only 41 crore. BCCI’s chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said the body had yet to receive any official communication about the investigation

Italian naval guards remanded to judicial custody

A Kollam court on Monday remanded two Italian Naval guards — arrested and charged with murder over the killing of two Indian fishermen — to judicial custody till March 5.
Two Italian marines were produced before judicial magistrate in Kerala at his residence as the court was closed due to due to Mahashivratri.
The arrest of Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone, yesterday, marked the climax of four days of hard negotiations between Indian and Italian sides. The two were arrested by Kollam police from Kochi and registered a murder case under section 302 of IPC against the two men.

India’s anti-terror intelligence hub

The Indian government Monday said it would set up on March 1 a powerful anti-terror agency that will integrate and analyse inputs on terror threats in India and will have legal authority to make arrests and conduct search operations.
The order comes after the the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) Jan 11 approved the creation of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), an agency to maintain data of terror modules, terrorists, their associates, friends, families and supporters.

Sasikala breaks down in court

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s former aide Sasikala Natarajan broke down in court on Saturday during her questioning in the disproportionate assets case involving Jaya. Sasikala was questioned for the first time in the disproportionate assets case on Saturday.
Sasikala claimed that Jayalalithaa was not involved in the case. “Jayalalithaa is not involved in the affairs of partnership. I alone operated the bank account. Jaya was a partner but not involved in affairs. I take blame for some of the things,” she said in court.

Student stabs teacher to death in Chennai school

A teacher was stabbed to death in the classroom of a private school here on Thursday, allegedly by a 15-year-old student who was upset at being repeatedly reprimanded by her for not doing well in studies.
R. Uma Maheswari (39), who had been teaching science and Hindi for close to a decade at the St. Mary’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School on Armenian Street in Parry’s Corner, was sitting in the first floor room, for the IX A Hindi class, when the boy rushed in, slashed her throat and stabbed her in the abdomen and chest.

Ministers caught watching porn in assembly

In a huge embarrassment to the BJP government in Karnataka, two ministers were allegedly caught on TV camera watching porn clippings on mobile phone during assembly proceedings in the first such ugly incident in the state legislative history.
A regional TV channel aired the footage of Minister for Cooperation Laxman Savadi and Minister for Women and Child Development C C Patil allegedly watching the clippings, when the House debated the issue of hoisting of Pakistan national flag in a town in Bijapur district on new year’s day.

Yuvraj Singh has cancer

Yuvraj Singh, who played a stellar role in India’s ODI World Cup triumph last year, has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy in the United States, his physiotherapist said on Sunday.Yuvraj, who was Player of the Tournament in the World Cup last year with 362 runs, 15 wickets and four Man-of-the-Match awards, has also been taking ayurvedic medicines to battle the disease.
The 30-year-old left-hander has been in the US since last month being treated for what was earlier claimed to be a tumour in the lungs, by his family.
